I got my 1st pet corn snake today. Is it normal for it to be subdued & hide from me when I pass the cage?

Yes. It will probably take the better part of a week for it to settle down and get to know its enclosure and recognize you. they are usually upset when they have been permamentaly moved, but most of them cheer up and eat within a week to 10 days..
